Biography

Though jazz remained his 1st love, tenor saxophonist Sil Austin documented in a number of genres during the period of his lengthy career, including R&B, jump blues, country, pop, and also (using one occasion) disco-ish funk. Given birth to Silvester Austin in Dunnellon, FL, on Sept 17, 1929, Austin started playing around age group 12, influenced by golf swing legends like Coleman Hawkins and Lester Youthful. He relocated to NY while still an adolescent, and in 1946 received a talent display in the Apollo having a rendition of “Danny Boy.” His biggest breaks arrived in 1949, when he became a member of up 1st with Roy Eldridge and with Cootie Williams’ Birdland home music group, where he remained for 3 years. After spending 1953-1954 with Tiny Bradshaw (who helped him create the track that Ella Fitzgerald later on converted into his nickname, “TABLE TENNIS”), Austin struck from his personal and authorized with Mercury, rating a high Five R&B/Best 20 pop strike with 1956’s “Decrease Walk.” “PARTY” was another big strike, and in 1959, he released his most widely used and controversial recording, Sil Austin Takes on Pretty for individuals, which produced a little strike in Austin’s go back to “Danny Boy,” but was criticized by jazz purists because of its orchestral pop audio. Austin continued to be with Mercury for 12 years; in 1973, he shifted to Atlanta and documented for small 3rd party labels on / off, completely the mid-’90s. Austin dropped a four-year struggle with prostate tumor on Sept 1, 2001.
