Shirati Jazz

Biography

Contrary to the actual name suggests, Shirati Jazz isn’t a jazz music group, but instead among the best-known benga outfits in Kenya. Founded by D.O. (Daniel Owen) Misiani, Shirati Jazz adapts the rhythms and noises of the original nyatiti and orutu to a power lineup. Their lyrics function in the original praise song custom, providing support, encouragement, and flattery to listeners. Through the 1970s, Shirati Jazz had been moving a lot more than 20,000 singles per month in Kenya; while they’re less explosively well-known now than after that, they’re still energetic as a residence music group in Nairobi.
