Onward Brass Band

There were two Onward Brass Bands in New Orleans. The initial group was among the pioneering jazz-oriented brass rings, in fact predating jazz itself by way of a decade. Comprising three cornets or trumpets, two trombones, two clarinets, alto horn, baritone horn, tuba, snare drum and bass drum, The Onward Brass Music group was very important and well-known during its heyday. Manuel Perez led the ensemble beginning in 1903 (and until its demise in 1930); various other historic names who have been within the group included Lorenzo Tio, Jr., Peter Bocage, George Baquet and Ruler Oliver. The very first Onward Brass Music group (which never documented) split up shortly after the start of the Despair. In 1960 drummer Paul Barbarin (the kid from the initial Onward Brass Band’s alto horn participant Isidore Barbarin) produced a fresh Onward Brass Music group. Although in line with the previously group, the brand new music group acquired eight (instead of 12) parts: two trumpets, two trombones, clarinet, tuba, snare drum and bass drum but no baritone or alto horn. Paul Barbarin led the group until his loss of life in 1969. Clarinetist Louis Cottrell had taken over until he passed on in 1978. There have been a few later on appearances beneath the management of drummer Placide Adams but simply the Onward Brass Music group didn’t survive Cottrell.
