New York-based Antibalas were shaped in 1998 by musicians from Ruler Changó, the Spirit Providers, as well as the Daktaris. Inspired by Nigerian Afro-beat, American spirit, and Latin dance grooves, Antibalas began playing at night clubs around NY, hosting a weekend party known as Africalia, providing them with the opportunity to execute their particular design predicated on the mix of different civilizations immersed in the music group. After documenting Liberation Afrobeat, the live record, Live in NY! Summer 1999, premiered. Liberation Afro Defeat, Vol. 1 was released in early 2001. The group came back to documenting in 2004 and released WHO’S This America? over the Rope-a-Dope label, accompanied by Protection on Anti Information in 2007. After expanded touring and studio room and live collaborations by its several members, Antibalas came back having a self-titled recording in the summertime of 2012.
