Minstrels of Annie Street

When Lu Watters’ Yerba Buena Jazz Music group in 1940 helped to start the dixieland revival using their performances at San Francisco’s Dawn Membership on Annie Road, they were occasionally nicknamed “The Minstrels Of Annie Road.” In 1992 trombonist John Gill made a decision to make use of that name as the name of his trad sextet. The music of his music group, which was noted on the 1993 Stomp Off Compact disc (Primary Tuxedo Rag) is very much indeed in the custom of Watters and especially Turk Murphy’s afterwards groups. During that documenting, the Minstrels contains Gill (who also had taken periodic vocals), cornetist Bob Schulz, Phil Howe on clarinet and soprano, pianist Ray Skjelbred, banjoist Carl Lunsford and Costs Carroll on tuba; guests over the recording had been drummer Hal Smith and trumpeter Chris Tyle.
