John Medeski

Organist John Medeski has turned into a recognized and respected participant in N.Con.C.’s downtown jazz picture and, even more popularly, along with his group Medeski, Martin & Solid wood. Given birth to in 1965 in Kentucky, Medeski grew up in Feet. Lauderdale, Florida where he started playing piano together with his dad while still a child; traditional piano lessons started at age five. Furthermore to his affinity for Bach, Beethoven, and Debussy, Medeski discovered, and entertained family members with, outdated favorites from the ’40s and ’50s. With the middle-’70s, he was playing appropriately with dance and movie theater companies, in addition to executing at recitals and tournaments. By enough time he was 13, he previously uncovered jazz piano greats Bud Powell, Cecil Taylor, and Oscar Peterson. Medeski after that began studying tranquility and theory with Lee Shaw, and in addition around this period began Traditional western musical theory and counterpoint research at college. Medeski made a decision against seeking a classical profession after competing in a gala reception when he was 14. Following this, he concentrated even more on improvisational and folk music, particularly African and BLACK folk music. Through the first ’80s, Medeski performed in a multitude of ensembles, including chamber and wedding ceremony, was musical movie director for movie theater productions, had written two musicals, and performed bassoon. He began exploring the neighborhood jazz picture after investing in a Fender Rhodes, and began the band Crisis. Frequently playing gigs with region musicians including Tag Murphy, he was asked by Jaco Pastorious to execute on Pastorius’ 1981 Japanese tour, but Medeski’s mom wouldn’t allow him! In 1982, Medeski earned an NEA Prize, and a season later shifted to Boston to review traditional music with Leonard Shure at the brand new Britain Conservatory. For his second season, though, he transformed musical directions and moved into Went Blake’s Third Stream plan. At NEC, he also researched with George Russell, Dave Holland, and Joe Maneri. It had been here, as well, that he fulfilled Bob Moses, with whom Medeski started playing. Both would back again many visiting performers including Dewey Redman. He was released to the Hammond B-3 body organ by Mr. Jellybelly, who he started gigging with nearly nightly with. Medeski provides performed in Either/Orchestra, Ken Schaphorst Big Music group, as well as the Jazz Composers Alliance, and caused Anthony Davis and Sam Streams. He performed duo gigs frequently at the Town Gate from 1988 to 1990, and moved to NY, where he began using Chris Solid wood, Reggie Workman, and Billy Martin. Medeski also became mixed up in downtown jazz picture, and it has performed using the Lounge Lizards, John Zorn, and so many more. Medeski, Martin & Solid wood became ever more popular because the ’90s advanced, bringing jazz to some younger, frequently rock-oriented audience. Usually referred to as a collaborator, Medeski finally shipped his debut single album, ANOTHER Period, for Okeh in Apr, 2013. That same 12 months, he collaborated with guitarist Tisziji Muñoz on Beauty as Beauty. Medeski after that became a member of drummer Matt Wilson’s quartet for 2014’s Gathering Contact. In 2016, he reunited with Muñoz for When Coltrane Phone calls! Program 3: Living Immortality.
