John Abell

A Scottish singer, composer, and lutenist John Abell was created in 1653. Having acquired a qualification in music type Cambridge in 1684, Abell remaining England following a 1688 revolution, obtaining, as Catholic, existence in England hard. From the exiled courtroom of Wayne II, Abell, whose status as a vocalist was remarkable, journeyed throughout European countries, where his remarkable countertenor tone of voice was much valued. Returning to Britain around 1700, Abell performed broadly, singling the main part in The View of Paris by Daniel Purcell. Completely established in Britain, Abell nevertheless managed his ties using the Continent, most likely making several appointments. His publications add a Collection of Tunes in British (1701) and AN OPTION Assortment of Italian Ayres (1703). Written in the Italian custom, Abell’s original tunes are thought to be quite standard. He passed away in Cambridge, ca. 1716.
