Johannes Alanus

Johannes Alanus was an British cleric who was simply a beloved of Ruler Edward III. Alanus (also called “John Aleyn”) produced the rounds from the monasteries in Kent collecting fees in the years following Black Loss of life. In 1362 he was honored among the 26 canonries in St. George’s Chapel in Windsor and was called a chaplain in the Chapel Royal. Alanus offered in these capacities until his loss of life in 1373, ready a manuscript of his musical functions to St. George’s. It isn’t known to currently exist. Alanus is within three manuscripts accorded the authorship of a fantastic and complicated motet, Sub Arturo plebs vallata/Fons citharizancium/In omnem terram exivit. It seems in the Codex Chantilly, the so-called “Yoxford” manuscript, as well as the tenor by itself is shown for example within a treatise within the mid-fifteenth hundred years Italian source referred to as “Q 15” in Bologna. Alanus can be acknowledged with two German Lieder, a virelai (also in the Reina Codex), and an un-texted fragment in the dropped Strasbourg manuscript that was copied by Charles Coussemaker (Strasbourg: Bibliothèque Municipale 222 C. 22). This last-named supply can be notoriously unreliable with regards to attributions to composers. Nonetheless it may be the motet Sub Arturo plebs that delivers the greatest task. It was created to get a festive event and the written text mentions the brands of some 14 music artists, including Alanus (or “Aleyn”) himself. Over time various scholars possess advanced the building blocks of the Purchase from the Garter in 1349 or the wedding ceremony celebrating the success of Potiers (Apr 23, 1358) as is possible events that Alanus’ motet was created. But an in depth study of the music artists called shows that it might not need been made up before 1370. In stylistic conditions, the motet is usually of a sort even more germane to the first fifteenth hundred years than towards the 1370s; had been it written later on than 1373, after that Johannes Alanus the cleric isn’t the same person mainly because Johannes Alanus the composer. Many British musicologists are convenient with taking the latter situation than to improve their whole idea about the introduction of musical design in the mid-fourteenth hundred years. It continues to be a secret. Two additional functions ascribed to “Aleyn” in the Aged Hall Manuscript and another so-designated in Strasbourg had been also once regarded as the task of Alanus, but are actually thought to participate in a later author of that name.
