Known principally for his use early jazz clarinetist George Lewis (a fellow Fresh Orleansian), Watkins also used Child Howard, Isaiah Morgan, Natural herb Morand, and Punch Miller. Watkins performed piano as a young child, switching to drums in his past due teens. He started using Lewis in 1946, and continuing to try out and record with him in to the ‘60s. As an associate of Lewis’s music group, Watkins also supported the blues and vaudeville vocalist Lizzie Kilometers on live recordings manufactured in the middle ‘50s. Illness curtailed Watkins’s musical actions after 1966.
