Joe Poston

Joe Poston had a strange profession. A good altoist with an excellent tone, Poston can be most well-known for the time that he spent as an associate of Jimmie Noone’s Apex Golf club Orchestra from 1928-30. Even though the music group was a two-horn sextet (with Earl Hines on piano), Poston hardly ever really soloed. His part was to continuously play the melody behind Noone, both in ensembles and during Noone’s clarinet solos. Before becoming a member of that music group, Poston had caused Doc Make from 1922-24 and in 1927, and on riverboats with Destiny Marable. After departing Noone (his alternative, in an identical part, was Ed Pollack), Poston used Cook to get a third period before retiring from music because of worsening wellness, spending his last eight years inside a sanitarium. Poston under no circumstances led his personal record day, but he could be heard on information by Make and Noone.
