A musical legend within their local Mississippi, the long-lived gospel group the Jackson Southernaires was formed in 1940 by manufacturer Frank Crisler; originally composed of Huey Williams, Roger Bryant, Jr., Maurice Surrell, Adam Burks, and Luther Jennings, the quintet had taken its first cues in the Mississippi Blind Children but quickly honed its distinctive style, getting the initial group in the condition to implement electric guitar, bass, drums, and key pad to their stage action. After years of touring, they agreed upon their first agreement with Duke/Peacock in 1963; their debut, As well Late, was among the label’s best-selling produces.
