Area of the loosely defined band of contemporary indie rock rings heavily influenced by first-generation shoegazers want My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus and Mary String, the Cocteau Twins, and Slowdive (see also Ringo Deathstarr and Asobi Seksu, amongst others), San Francisco’s Foxtail Somersault audio uncannily just like the sort of music group that would have already been the toast of university radio circa 1990. Guitarist Seiken Nakama produced Foxtail Somersault in 2004 after shifting from LA to SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. In the time-honored custom of posting advertisements on Craigslist, Nakama discovered vocalist, guitarist, and lyricist Catherine Howland (whose dreamy, helium-pitched vocal design is entirely inside the post-Liz Fraser shoegazer custom), business lead guitarist Adam Spadaro, bassist Brian Anderson, and drummer Tag Dungey and begun to forge a mixture of ambient pop affects ranging over the temporal range from Brian Eno’s early single career to modern post-rockers like Broken Public Picture and Explosions in the Sky. The band’s debut EP, Fathom, was self-released in the springtime of 2007.
