Håkon Austbø

Håkon Austbø is actually a cosmopolitan number within the music picture, a pianist identified not merely using the music of countrymen Edvard Grieg (complete functions), Geirr Tveitt, Fartein Valen, and Ase Hedstrom, but with music from all around the globe, compositions by Messiaen, Debussy (complete functions), Satie, Janácek (complete functions), Scriabin (10 sonatas), Beethoven, Brahms, and many more. And Austbø’s musical education is a multi-ingredient formula as well, from his homeland, and shifting to France, the U.S., Germany, and Britain. Furthermore, Austbø resided and worked well in Holland for three years before finally time for Norway. Håkon Austbø was created in Kongsberg, Norway, on Oct 22, 1948. After early research in Norway, he enrolled in the Paris Conservatory and experienced later research in Paris in the Ecole Normale de Musique. In 1970 he received the Concours Country wide de la Guilde Française des Artistes Solistes, a Paris-based competition. The next year captured 1st prize in the Olivier Messiaen Competition, in Royan, France. Despite his successes, Austbø enrolled at Juilliard and down the road in the Munich-based Staatliche Hochschule für Musik and in London. In 1973 Austbø produced his first saving, an LP of Debussy duets, with Claude Helffer. Austbø would turn into a prizewinner in a number of important contests, including for duo piano overall performance in the 1974 ARD International Competition in Munich, as well as for the 1975 Ravel Competition in Paris. Austbø relocated to Holland and in 1980 became a member of the faculty in the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht. He documented the 10 Scriabin sonatas for the Simax label and was presented with a Norway Grammy Award for the task in 1990. In 1994 Austbø approved a post within the faculty from the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He also continuing to concertize and record with great achievement: Austbø gained an Edison Award in 1998 for his three-disc group of the entire Messiaen Catalogue des oiseaux. Moreover, he gained Norway’s most sought after music prize in 2003, the Grieg Award. Among Austbø’s even more acclaimed recordings may be the 2010 reissue on Outstanding Classics of the entire solo piano functions of Grieg.
