George Washington

Washington used and/or arranged for most of the very best bandleaders from the ’30s and ’40s, including Don Redman, Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, and Count number Basie. Delivered in southeast Georgia, Washington grew up over the Florida range in Jacksonville. He used the trombone at age group ten; in 1922 he researched at Edward Waters University in Jacksonville. He shifted to Philadelphia in 1925, functioning briefly with J.W. Pepper’s music group before relocating to NEW YORK, where he researched at the brand new York Conservatory using the traditional composer, conductor, and educator Walter Damrosch. He caused a number of obscure rings in NY over the following many years before getting gigs with Don Redman in 1931 and Benny Carter in 1932. Then worked as an employee arranger for impresario Irving Mills and his Mills Blue Tempo Band, also dealing with the trumpeter Henry “Crimson” Allen. Washington performed in Henderson’s orchestra in 1936. He was with Armstrong from 1937-43 before shifting to the Western world Coastline, where he caused Fletcher’s sibling Horace Henderson, Basie, and Carter. After 1947 he led his very own rings in NEVADA and California. He used drummer Johnny Otis for a long period, and caused Joe Darensbourg in 1960. Thereafter Washington proved helpful freelance being a trombonist and arranger.
