Edna Hicks

Edna Hicks was a fresh Orleans native, and it is first heard from in 1916 when she actually is listed in the solid of a dark vaudeville display in NY in 1916. She toured within the TOBA circuit and was very popular in her day time, specifically in the Midwest, showing up in Chicago and Cincinnati. Edna Hicks had not been a particularly creative Blues vocalist, but got a loud, very clear voice and an excellent feeling of timing. Her documenting career started in March of 1923 and lasted precisely twelve months. She recorded a few classes each for Victor, Columbia, Ajax, Brunswick, Vocalion, Paramount and Gennett. Edna Hicks’ 32 released sides for these businesses are one of the rarest of any created by the blues females from the 1920s, and her last Paramount coupling (Paramount 12090) hasn’t been located. Although Fletcher Henderson was her most typical accompanist, she was also supported by Lemuel Fowler and Porter Grainger. Edna Hicks was on tour to Chicago when, on August 16, 1925, she was washing an old container bellied range with gasoline. Once the rags she was using ignited, Edna Hicks burnt to loss of life. She was 29 yrs . old.
