The Gypsy-tinged quartet DeVotchKa were formed in Denver, CO by multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata (vocals, guitar, trumpet), Tom Hagerman (violin, accordion), Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone, bass), and percussionist Shawn Ruler. Supporting music artists rotated in and from the eclectic group’s lineup, adding such diverse noises as strings and bazoukis. Although some defined DeVotchKa’s audio as polka-rock or circus music, the music group was in fact a cross-pollination of several affects, including cabaret, spaghetti Westerns, as well as the immigrant dance music of Eastern European countries. Supermelodrama, their self-released 2000 debut, garnered many accolades, as well as the music group toured to get the record with such luminaries as Calexico, 16 Hp, Flogging Molly, and Archer Prewitt. Una Volta implemented in-may 2003. Issued with the Boulder, CO indie Cicero, DeVotchKa marketed the album by way of a tour with observed burlesque/fetish entertainer Dita Von Teese.
