Damon Short

A native of Rock and roll Isle, IL, Short’s early music education came mostly through hearing information: Dixieland through post-bop, Indian music, early-20th-century concert music, and the task of microtonal composer Harry Partch, whose music and self-made instruments Brief studied in NORTH PARK in 1974. Brief received his bachelor’s and master’s levels in music from North Illinois School DeKalb, where he was an associate from the school’s globe music ensemble, which performed Balinese and Javanese gamelan music. In 1981, Brief formed Worry Afterwards, a Chicago-based quintet that drew its repertoire in the music of Thelonious Monk. He resided in New Orleans for four years before shifting back again to the Chicago region, which he continues to create his bottom of functions. Short’s initial record was Penguin Shuffle (BlueRoom); documented in 1986, the record was made up of periods recorded both in New Orleans and DeKalb. It had been released in 1987.
