Bobby Bradford

One of the better trumpeters to emerge from your avant-garde, Bobby Bradford largely fulfilled the potential of Don Cherry (whose chops declined over time because of the timeframe allocated to executing on flute and additional tools). Bradford was raised in Dallas, playing trumpet locally with such regional players as Cedar Walton and David Newman. In 1953, he relocated to LA where he fulfilled and used Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy. Bradford spent amount of time in the armed service and in college before getting Don Cherry’s alternative using the Ornette Coleman Quartet in 1961-1963, an interval when the group however rarely proved helpful. After shifting to LA, Bradford became a college teacher and in addition started a longtime association with clarinetist John Carter; his mellow trumpet combined in well with Carter’s dissonant plane tickets.
