Art Monroe

An excellent mainstream pianist who didn’t record until he had been 44, Monroe were able to help to make three albums before his premature death from tumor. Monroe (who was simply the next cousin of Expenses Monroe, the daddy of bluegrass) started piano lessons when he was six. Although classically qualified, he performed in regional dance rings as an adolescent. During 1957-63 he was within the armed service, stationed in Brooklyn (where he performed within the Brooklyn Navy Backyard Music group) and could visit the NEW YORK jazz scene frequently. Settling in Columbia, MD after his release, Monroe worked throughout the day as the mind from the Music Division of Howard Community University and played periodic gigs during the night. An excellent pianist who regarded as his early affects to become Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson and Horace Metallic before he created his own strategy, Art Monroe documented for his personal Jazzbeau label in 1984 and produced two additional models for V.S.O.P. before his loss of life.
