12th Tribe

The California duo of Dave Portillo and Eddie Sierra began rapping in 1985 beneath the name of Deity, later on changing it to 12th Tribe. Affected by spirit and rock, they loved the rap of Kool Moe Dee, Whodini, as well as the Extra fat Boys. They got their name through the 12th tribe of Israel — the Benjamites, mighty warriors — and released an recording in 1991 for Frontline. They portrayed a tougher picture than most Christian rap performers and got a relatively hard road rap sound.
