Virginia Mayhew

On her behalf Chiaroscuro CD of 1996, Virginia Mayhew displays mature sounds on each of her reeds and a solid improvising design that builds from your tradition but has a lot of spontaneity and chance-taking; she also displays strong talent like a composer. Mayhew began on clarinet when she was ten and six years later on turned to alto to become listed on her senior high school jazz music group. When she was 20, she relocated to SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, where she obtained experience learning and playing locally (including with Earl Hines and Frank Zappa). In 1987, she received the brand new School’s first annual Zoot Sims Memorial Scholarship or grant and relocated to NY. Since that time, Mayhew spent some time working with trumpeter Rebecca Franks (they co-led a quintet that performed on the 1990 Monterey Jazz Celebration and documented a 1988 time for the Italian Philology label), the Toshiko Akiyoshi Orchestra, the Sahib Shihab big music group, Al Gray (she shows up on his Capri Compact disc Fab), Clark Terry, Terry Gibbs, Kenny Barron, and DIVA, amongst others. Not only is it an educator and an experienced arranger, Virginia Mayhew provides often led her very own groups.
