One of the more interesting male/female vocal groups, the Independents produced some outstanding singles in the first ’70s. Chuck Jackson, Maurice Jackson, Helen Curry, and Eric Thomas specialised in melodramatic, overwrought, but flawlessly performed love tunes. Their first solitary for Wand, “Simply so long as you Require Me,” arranged the stage in 1972, achieving number eight within the R&B graphs. They topped those graphs in 1973 with “Departing Me,” while “Baby I AM Missing You” managed to get to number 4. They never really had any music attract very much pop support, but spirit fans cherished the lyrical situations and group interplay. Their last strike was “Allow This Be considered a Lesson for you” in 1974, another R&B TOP strike. Jackson and Yancy continued to attain achievement as a creation and songwriting group, scoring strikes with Ronnie Dyson and Natalie Cole.
