Sunbeams

The starting pad for a Joe Tex, R&B vocal group the Sunbeams formed in Long Isle, NY in 1950; tenor business lead Bobby Lee Hollis, 1st tenor Bobby Coleman, second tenor Wayne Davis, baritone business lead John Cumbo and bass William Edwards comprised the initial lineup, based on Marv Goldberg’s profile within the Apr 1997 problem of Discoveries. Unlike almost all their contemporaries, the group spent near 2 yrs in rehearsals before actually searching for professional gigs, finally producing the rounds of the brand new York Town and Long Isle golf club circuits in 1952 — circa 1953, the lineup included Tex, who quickly exited to support a solo profession. In early 1955 the Sunbeams authorized to the Herald label, quickly documenting four Cumbo originals with Hollis on business lead — the solitary “Inform Me Why” made an appearance in the springtime, but Herald experienced its hands complete promoting concurrent strikes from your Nutmegs (“Tale Untold”), the Turbans (“WHENEVER YOU Dance”) and Al Savage (“Heaven Princess”), as well as the Sunbeams slipped with the splits. Hollis remaining the lineup in 1956, along with fresh business lead tenor Henry Williamson, the group waited out the rest of its Herald offer before putting your signature on to Acme in middle-’57, liberating “Please Say YOU WILL BE Mine” to small notice several months later on. The Sunbeams break up in 1958, with Coleman heading single and Williamson becoming a member of among the many Ink Places lineups after that on tour.
