Stef Chura

Michigan local Stef Chura writes wistful, visceral music inspired by her lifestyle experiences. Equally inspired by ’90s choice/indie rock and roll and ’60s-’70s folk-rock, she’s a unique fingerpicked guitar design and an unmistakable twangy tone of voice. After shifting from upstate Michigan to Ypsilanti in ’09 2009, she started performing single and releasing demonstration tapes, quickly learning to be a fixture of the neighborhood music picture. She come up with a music group with Amber Fellows and Shelley Salant (both afterwards of Rebel Kind) this year 2010, plus they released a tape in 2011. She shifted to Detroit in 2012, performed bass in a few regional rings, and released even more of her personal materials on cassette. After conference drummer Ryan Clancy (Jamaican Queens, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.) in 2014, both began playing collectively. They documented Chura’s debut studio room recording, Messes, in 2015 with engineer Fred Thomas, who also performed on the recording. Three songs through the recording were released on the break up EP with Anna Burch (Frontier Ruckus, Failed Blossoms), which made an appearance on Hand Tapes in 2016.
