A super program arranged simply by BBC DJ Gilles Peterson — a champ of Brazilian music since his period being a pirate radio broadcaster — Sonzeira involved legends, underrecognized veterans, and younger modern musicians alike. Looking to present a modern-sounding record with allegiance towards the country’s many noises, Peterson visited Rio and, in January 2014, collected famous brands Elza Soares, Naná Vasconcelos, Marcos Valle, Ed Motta, Seu Jorge, and Alexandre Kassin. On Record Tale Time 2014, the task was previewed via 7″ using a radical interpretation of Freeez’s 1981 Brit funk traditional “Southern Freeez,” fronted by Emanuelle Araújo. The record, Brasil Bam Bam Bam, premiered that June through Talkin’ Noisy/Virgin EMI. It had been the first discharge on Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud in over ten years.
