Few of rock and roll & roll’s founding numbers are while likable while Rufus Thomas. Thomas got his initial success being a saving designer in 1953 with “Carry Kitty,” a funny solution record to Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Doggie.” It produced number three around the R&B graphs, giving Sunlight Records its 1st national hit, while some from the sweetness went from the triumph after Sunlight owner Sam Phillips dropped a lawsuit for plagiarizing the initial Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller tune. Thomas, strangely, would make only 1 additional record for Sunlight, and recorded just sporadically through the entire remaining 1950s. Thomas and his child Carla would end up being the 1st celebrities for the Stax label, for whom they documented a duet in 1959, “‘Trigger I REALLY LIKE You” (once the organization was still referred to as Satellite). Within the ’60s, Carla would become among Stax’s biggest celebrities. By himself, Rufus wasn’t as effective as his child, but issued a reliable stream of good dance/novelty singles. They were not really deep or psychological statements, or designed to become. Vaguely prefiguring components of funk, the highlight was around the stripped-down groove and Rufus’ good-time vocals, which didn’t consider himself or anything significantly. The biggest undoubtedly was “Strolling your dog,” which produced the very best Ten in 1963, and was included in the Rolling Rocks on their initial album. Thomas strike his commercial top in the first ’70s, when “Perform the Funky Poultry,” “(Perform The) Force and Draw,” and “The Break down” all produced the R&B Best Five. Because the tune titles themselves explain, funk was today driving his audio instead of blues or spirit. Thomas drew upon his vaudeville history to place them over on-stage with extravagant footwork that shown exceptional agility for a guy well into his 50s. The collapse from the Stax label within the middle-’70s meant the finish of his profession, basically, since it did for most other performers with the business. In 2001, Rufus Thomas was inducted in to the Blues Hall of Popularity. Later that season, on Dec 15, he passed away at St. Francis medical center in Memphis, TN.
