Hunter started contributing lyrics towards the Deceased in the invitation of his friend, Deceased guitarist Jerry Garcia, by the group’s third recording, Aoxomoxoa, in 1969. Since that time, he wrote a number of the Dead’s most remarkable terms, including “Truckin'” (“Just what a very long, strange trip it has been”) as well as the 1987 return hit “Contact of Gray.” Hunter started recording single albums in the Dead’s record label in 1974 and continuing sporadically since.
