While one may imagine Maynard James Keenan could have more than enough going to keep him busy being a frontman using the groupings Tool and AN IDEAL Group, in 2007 he made a decision to record an album under just one more name: Puscifer. Described by Keenan as “the area where my Identification, Ego, and Anima all get together to switch cookie formulas,” Puscifer initial appeared because the name of the fictional music group Keenan fronted within a cameo for the HBO sketch humor series Mr. Present in 1995. It wasn’t until 2003 that Keenan in fact recorded beneath the name, when he teamed up with Danny Lohner to get a track known as “Rev 22:20” for the Underworld soundtrack, and it wasn’t until four years afterwards that he established to focus on a whole Puscifer record. Organized much less as a normal “rock-band” and much more being a musical collective where Keenan can work with a spinning lineup of likeminded performers, Puscifer’s early documenting projects featured a big cast of observed music artists, including Tim Alexander from Primus, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk from Audioslave and Trend Against the device, former Ruler Crimson member Trey Gunn, violinist Lisa Germano, pop vocalist/songwriter Jonny Polonsky, and celebrity and vocalist Milla Jovovich.
