Hip-hop/metropolitan soul supergroup Lucy Pearl was shaped in the summertime of 1999 because the brainchild of Tony! Toni! Loté multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Raphael Saadiq (previously referred to as Raphael Wiggins), who remaining the music group he co-founded along with his sibling D’Wayne in 1998. Saadiq 1st approached DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad of the Tribe Called Mission, which experienced disbanded after their 1998 LP The Like Movement, and ex-En Vogue member Dawn Robinson, who experienced originally departed that group for any solo profession in 1997 but jumped at the opportunity to use Saadiq and Muhammad. Relying a good deal on live instrumentation furthermore to examples and turntable function (Muhammad even takes on bass and acoustic guitar), Lucy Pearl released its self-titled debut recording in the springtime of 2000.
