Ed Thigpen


A sophisticated and subtle drummer who’s a professional with brushes, Ed Thigpen continues to be most well-known for his longtime account using the Oscar Peterson Trio. The kid of Ben Thigpen (who performed drums with Andy Kirk’s Orchestra through the entire 1930s), Ed obtained early experience using Cootie Williams from 1951-1952. Over time in the Military, he caused Dinah Washington (1954), Lennie Tristano, Johnny Hodges, Bud Powell, and Billy Taylor’s Trio (1956-1959). Thigpen changed guitarist Supplement Ellis with Peterson’s group in 1959, sticking to the masterful pianist through 1965 and showing up on a large number of information. His quiet however swinging style properly backed Peterson and bassist Ray Dark brown. After departing Peterson, Thigpen spent two intervals touring the planet with Ella Fitzgerald during 1966-1972. He resolved in Copenhagen in 1972, proved helpful as a instructor, wrote many instructional books, and continuing using the who’s who of jazz being a freelancer. As an intermittent head, Ed Thigpen provides recorded schedules for Verve (an obscurity from 1966), GNP Crescendo, Reckless, Timeless, and Justin Period.
