Cyro Baptista

Completed musician Cyro Baptista provides played the entire selection of percussion instruments from his indigenous Brazil, in addition to a great many other world music instruments. Structured out of NY, he arrived on the Paquito d’Rivera discharge, on John Zorn’s film functions within the middle-’80s, and he continuing to seem on the casual Zorn release through the entire ’90s. Other performers Baptista caused through both years demonstrate his flexibility: Laurie Anderson and Herbie Mann. He provides backed Brazilian performers Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, and Marisa Monte (on her behalf 1991 N.Con.C. who’s-who-studded Mais), and shows up on many ’90s produces from jazz performers Cassandra Wilson and Holly Cole. Baptista’s exceptional and mixed réamounté speaks of the power of percussion that functions in worldwide, pop, and jazz musics. Zorn, bassist Greg Cohen, Marc Ribot, and Nana Vasconcelos perform on his initial album as head, Vira Loucos. Released by Zorn’s Avant label in 1997, the documenting captures his outrageous interpretations from the music of Brazilian traditional composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Keeping Zorn, he became a member of the composer’s Dreamers ensemble so when a solo musician transferred to the Tzadik label; Baptista released Defeat the Donkey and its own mirror image Like the Donkey in 2002 and 2005, respectively. Banquet from the Spirits implemented in 2008. Infinito made an appearance in ’09 2009. That calendar year, Baptista performed on a minimum of eight albums, including game titles by Sting, Tim Sparks, Luciana Souza and Duck Baker. He also gained a USA Fellowship award from Chicago’s USA Artists company. Baptista released his Solos: The Jazz Periods DVD this year 2010, performed on six Zorn dates, in addition to recordings by Jacky Terrasson, Jamie Saft, and Janis Ian. Banquet from the Spirits shipped their own quantity to Zorn’s second Masada structure task with Caym: Reserve of Angels, Vol. 17 in 2011 and performed on information with Dreamers, Zorn, and Todd Clouser. On the following four years, Baptista toured with Banquet from the Spirits and Defeat the Donkey, and continuing his prolific are a sideman — mainly with Zorn. In 2016, he released BlueFly, offering his quartet and a big ensemble of collaborators. He was also co-headliner with New Zion Trio on Sunlight Seas for RareNoise.
