Reedist and drummer Nakao Kanji, tuba participant Sekijima Takero and innovator and alto saxophonist Shinoda Masami were japan band Compostela. Dynamic through the early ’90s, this talented and smart group of music artists brought a fresh element to japan jazz and rock and roll worlds: chindon music. A social tradition, chindon is definitely a means of advertising fresh businesses utilizing music artists dressed up as samurai and geishas who publicly execute uplifting, brass/woodwinds-based music that is clearly a hybrid a variety of affects, including Eastern Western european folk music. Compostela had taken this road music and folded it in to the avant jazz picture of Japan. Shinoda Masami passed away suddenly by the end of 1992, finishing this inspired task. The only real domestically available discharge of the music is certainly Wadachi, on the Tzadik label, a variety of live recordings spanning 1991 and 1992.
