Cherrywine marked the come back of Ishmael Butler, aka Butterfly, who made considerable waves within the hip-hop globe with Digable Planets. DP known as it quits in 1996, and Butler came back to his boyhood house of Seattle, where he rediscovered the blues and trained himself to try out your guitar, among various other musical instruments. He also dabbled in performing, appearing in Wish Hampton’s acclaimed brief film I Am Ali. Signing up for Butler’s vocals and electric guitar in Cherrywine had been Thaddeus Turner (electric guitar, vocals, tips), Gerald “Tugboat” Turner (bass, vocals), and Bubba Jones (electric guitar, keyboards, vocals). Although it was officially a hip-hop task, Cherrywine highlighted no DJ, didn’t depend on direct rapping by itself, and frequently dabbled in neo-psychedelia and deconstructed pop and blues. The debut LP Shiny Black dropped in-may 2003 from Dcide/Babygrande, and evaluations were designed to everyone from OutKast and Prince to Butler’s very own past in Digable Planets. Cherrywine toured through the entire summertime of 2003 to get the album.
