Bernard Edwards

Biography

Bernard Edwards’ supple, big-bottom basslines powered platinum strikes by Chic, the ’70s dance/pop music group that he co-founded with guitarist/songwriter/maker Nile Rodgers. The group obtained three precious metal singles and something platinum solitary including two number 1 pop/R&B singles, “Le Freak” and “MEMORIES”; two platinum albums, C’est Chic and Risque; and something gold recording, Chic. A Chic live documenting, Live in the Budokan, premiered Feb 23, 1999, through Rodgers’ Sumthing Distribution. The bassist co-wrote and created most of Chic’s information in addition to those the duo created for Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, among others. Edwards later on created and performed in ’80s supergroup Power Train station (“Some ENJOY IT Hot”); created ABC’s “When Smokey Sings,” Ross’ “Phone,” and Pole Stewart; and performed bass around the Rodgers-produced Madonna LP Just like a Virgin and Jody Watley’s “NOT Want Me.” Delivered Oct 31, 1952, in Greenville, NEW YORK, Edwards fulfilled Rodgers in 1970. They started playing at NY jazz night clubs and taverns. Interacting with drummer Tony Thompson, they shaped ny Band, which supported the live concerts of vocal group NEW YORK. The two could be noticed on Walter Murphy & ny Band’s gold one “A Fifth of Beethoven” (amount ten R&B, number 1 pop, springtime 1976). Developing Chic, the group marketed their instruments to improve cash to record paths to protected a major-label record offer. They received the unavoidable rejections until they finally got a cope with Atlantic Information through chief executive Jerry Greenberg. Their 1st solitary, “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah),” began as an enormous dance club strike and went platinum, hitting quantity six R&B/pop on Billboard’s graphs in fall 1977. The debut LP released in Dec 1977, Chic, proceeded to go precious metal, peaking at quantity 27 play springtime 1978. Chic’s biggest strike, “Le Freak,” was documented at the famous Power Train station in NEW YORK with performers Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin, keyboardists Raymond Jones (who later on created and co-wrote with Freddie Washington Whitney Houston’s “Somebody for me personally”) and Robert Sabino, percussionist Sammy Figueroa, as well as the Chic Strings: Cheryl Hong, Marianne Carroll, and Karen Milne, aimed by Gene Orloff. “Le Freak” parked at number 1 R&B for five weeks, number 1 play fall 1978, time for the top place 3 x. It became the biggest-selling solitary in Atlantic Information’ history, offering over four million copies. Their second LP, C’est Chic (number 4 pop, past due 1978), proceeded to go platinum, offered over one million copies and yielded the “Le Freak” follow-up “I’D LIKE Your Like” b/w “(Crazy) Bone tissue.” With therefore very much success, Rodgers and Edwards became in-demand songwriters/suppliers, racking up large hits, especially with Diana Ross and Sister Sledge. Atlantic Information told them they can work with any musician on the roster. Rodgers and Edwards decided to go with among the label’s lesser-known works, reasoning that if indeed they developed a hit to get a superstar work, the work would get the majority of the reputation as well as the credit rather than themselves. The duo thought we would create a four-sister teenage work known as Sister Sledge, agreed upon to its Atco subsidiary. The quartet got scored popular with “Like Don’t PROCEED THROUGH No Adjustments on Me” and caused the manufacturers of Sterling silver Convention (“Travel Robin Travel”) and Brad Shapiro (“Better Times”). Their 1st solitary with Rodgers and Edwards, released on Atlantic’s Cotillion label, was “He’s the best Dancer,” which strike number 1 R&B and number 2 pop in springtime 1979. “WE HAVE BEEN Family members,” the name tabs on Sister Sledge’s third recording, had currently received substantial dance golf club and radio play when it had been issued as an individual, providing the group its 1st and only qualified gold single, likely to number 1 R&B, number 2 pop in summer time 1979. The monitor was adopted from the 1979 Globe Series-winning Pittsburgh Pirates, many other agencies, became a typical tune for family members reunions, and apparently is going to be around so long as there are households. The WE HAVE BEEN Family LP proceeded to go platinum, peaking at number 3 pop in springtime 1979. The Rodgers/Edwards-produced follow-up LP Like Someone Today boasted the one “Surely got to Like Someone” (amount six R&B). The name track with their 1981 LP All American Women (reissued being a 1995 Rhino Compact disc) visited number 3 R&B. “MEMORIES” b/w the sensual “A Warm Summer time Night time” was the 1st solitary from Chic’s third recording, Risqué (platinum, quantity five pop); it remained at number 1 R&B/pop for six weeks in summer time 1979. The next solitary, “My Forbidden Enthusiast” b/w “HOW ABOUT Me,” managed to get to amount 33 R&B and its own extended 12″ one edition became a post-release collectible. The 3rd single, “My Foot Keep Dance,” featured touch dance by Fayard Nicholas from the Nicholas Brothers and Eugene Jackson in our Gang. Once the Sugarhill Gang rapped over “MEMORIES” because of their groundbreaking million-selling strike “Rapper’s Joy,” Rodgers and Edwards amassed large royalties (after some litigation) from its achievement. Queen’s “A DIFFERENT ONE Bites the Dirt” sports activities a Edwards/”MEMORIES”-inspired bassline. Diana Ross caused the duo and was compensated using a platinum record, Diana (number 2 pop for 14 days, summer time 1980) and dual charting singles: “UGLY,” which proceeded to go gold and experienced a four-week operate in the main spot on both R&B and pop graphs in summer time 1980, and “I’m DEVELOPING” (quantity six R&B/quantity five pop). Both singles experienced “Friend to Friend” as their B-sides (some copies of “…Out” had “QUIT” because the B-side). The duo created Debbie Harry’s precious metal LP Koo Koo, including “Backfired” and “The Jam Was Shifting.” Not absolutely all of the collaborations were effective; they documented some monitors with Johnny Mathis which were discarded by shared consent between your producers as well as the singer. Amid all of this activity, Rodgers and Edwards in some way found time and energy to make former Chic history vocalist Norma Jean (self-titled debut LP for Bearsville Information released summertime 1978). Their True People LP yielded the one “Rebels Are We,” which visited amount eight R&B in July 1980. Ironically, the group’s last high-charting one wasn’t on the Chic record, but was the name an eye on the Soup for just one film soundtrack (quantity 14 R&B). Needless to say, with so very much achievement, the Chic audio influenced various documenting functions, most notably Switch, whose music was notches above a lot of the functions that copped the audio that Rodgers and Edwards experienced created. From the middle-’80s, the duo was no more producing together specifically. Tiring of the rigorous creation and touring routine, Chic disbanded with REMOVE IT (1981, “Stage Fright”) as well as the 1982 LPs Tongue in Chic (“Hangin'”) and Believer becoming their last albums for Atlantic. Both males embarked on illustrious creation professions: Rodgers experienced strikes with David Bowie (the main gold one “Let’s Dance,” “China Female”), Madonna (the nine-million offering LP Such as a Virgin, with the main title track one and the very best Five strikes “Material Female,” “Angel,” and “Outfit You Up”), and the machine (“Comin’ to America”) while Edwards documented with ABC, Fishing rod Stewart, Power Place, Starpoint, Missing People, and non-a Hendryx, amongst others. Rodgers and Edwards reunited for the 1992 Chic LP, Chic-ism (“Provide Me the Lovin’,” “Chic Mystique”) for Warner Bros. Information. At age 43, Bernard Edwards passed away of pneumonia while touring with Chic in Tokyo, Japan, on Apr 18, 1996.
