Altairs

This vocal quintet was formed in 1958 in Pittsburgh, USA, by Timothy Johnson (lead), Richard Harris (baritone), William Herndon (first tenor), Nathaniel Benson (second tenor) and Ralph Terry (bass). After their early displays at local institutions, Johnson was changed as business lead by Nathaniel’s cousin, George Benson. Because of their first saving they supported Annie Keith on ‘Fan’s Prayer’ and performed with her through the entire area. Many singles had been released by the brand new York label Amy Information, including ‘If YOU LIKE Me’ and ‘Groovie Period’. By 1960, George Benson got left to become listed on the Four Matters. The songwriter Otis Blackwell utilized the Altairs to demonstration songs for various other artists, like the first edition of ‘Come back To Sender’ documented by Elvis Presley. They afterwards toured thoroughly with Dinah Washington, Chubby Checker, the Shirelles and many more. The Altairs after that metamorphosed into Dinah’s Gentlemen – which highlighted Herndon, Benson and Harris through the Altairs, plus brand-new people Johnny Carter, Cornell Gunter and Chuck Barksdale. When Washington passed away in Dec 1963, Dinah’s Gentlemen folded as well.
