Toshi Ichiyanagi is among Japan’s most imaginative composers. Influenced from the avant garde functions of John Cage, Ichiyanagi offers consistently found fresh ways to communicate his musical eyesight. His 1960 structure, “Kaiki,” mixed Japanese devices, sho and koto, and traditional western devices, harmonica and saxophone. His 1967 piece, “Prolonged Voices” was created for any chorus followed by Moog and Buchla synthesizers. “Orchestral Space,” documented in 1978 from the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra carried out by Seiji Ozawa, was made up for digital modulators, magnetic tape and orchestra. Ichiyanagi’s most eccentric piece may be “Music For Piano #5: Fluxvariation,” offering darts thrown in to the back of the piano. Ichiyanagi, who analyzed in NY in the Julliard College of Music and the brand new College for Social Study, was the receiver of the Serge Koussevitzky reward in the Berkshire Music Camp.
