The Ledford String Band

b. Steven Walter Ledford, 2 June 1906, Bakersville, Mitchell State, NEW YORK, USA, d. 19 Sept 1980. Among 12 kids, with help from his dad, he began playing fiddle aged seven and gained a competition 2 yrs later on. His 1st professional work arrived as an associate, with two siblings, from the Carolina Ramblers String Music group. In 1931, the music group travelled to NY, where they performed on radio and in Feb 1932, they documented 20 edges for ARC, eight which obtained release on numerous labels including Ideal. Soon later on, they disbanded and Ledford came back to NEW YORK, where he wedded and became a farmer. He came back to music in the past due 30s, dealing with J.E. Mainer, Wade Mainer and Zeke Morris on numerous r / c and tours, where period he also produced many recordings with Mainer’s Mountaineers, including a edition of ‘Small Maggie’, which has since resulted in the song usually being connected with him. Ledford also documented with Jay Hugh Hall and Clyde Moody because the Happy-Go-Lucky Kids and in the first 40s, he worked well for quite a while at WDBJ Roanoke, Virginia, with Jay Hugh and Roy Hall. The rings performed an assortment of old-time and contemporary music not to mention were an impact on later on bluegrass rings. In 1942, Ledford retired to operate his plantation but many years later on, he, along with his sibling Wayne and Wayne Gardner, re-formed a edition from the Carolina Ramblers, which performed an extended residency in Maggie Valley.
