Ron Matthewson

b. Rognuald Andrew Matthewson, 19 Feb 1944, Lerwick, Shetland Isles, Scotland. Matthewson started playing piano at age three, but turned to bass at 16. The 1st music group with which he performed was an area quartet where he was teamed having a violinist, pianist and an accordionist playing reels and old-time dances. His 1st jazz excitement was for trad celebrities Acker Bilk and Chris Barber, and his 1st engagements having a well-known music group were using the Clyde Valley Stompers, with whom he relocated to London in 1962. After a spell back the Shetlands doing work for the Herring Sector Board, he came back to London to utilize Alex Welsh in 1964. He begun to function in today’s jazz framework with John Stevens, after that came back to Welsh’s music group for some time before hanging out with John Cox, Tubby Hayes, the Clarke-Boland Big Music group, Paz, Philly Joe Jones, Phil Woods’ Western european Tempo Machine, Gordon Beck’s Gyroscope, Stan Sulzmann, Kenny Wheeler and an extended spell with Ronnie Scott’s Quintet. There is also a duo with bass participant Ron Rubin.
