Philipp Nicolai

A German theologian who was simply schooled at Erfurt and Wittenberg, Nicolai wrote several theological treatises and many books of poetry. Like a composer his transfer rests with “Der Freudenspiegel des ewigen Lebens,” 1599. Many printings of the devotional works happened until 1674. The functions themselves are dated musically and officially show closer relationships with Minnesinger customs than contemporary past due Renaissance idioms. “Wie schon leuchet der Morgenstern” and “Wachet auf, ruft uns perish Stimme” are among Nicolai’s most significant works out of this collection.
