Pavlov’s Dog

The artsy very difficult rock group Pavlov’s Dog spanned progressive music and rock in quite similar way that Rush did in its start. Also like Hurry, Pavlov’s Dog experienced a vocalist, David Surkamp, whose unique high-pitched tone of voice was the group’s take-it-or-leave-it element. Outside of a little cult pursuing, most folks thought we would keep it, but on the years Pavlov’s Dog offers remained a favorite find for followers from the obscure end of American industry rock. Pavlov’s Doggie created in St. Louis in 1972 from the ashes of an area cover music group known as High on a little Hill, with Surkamp, previously from the minimal folk-rock act Contact, on vocals and electric guitar, joined by business lead guitarist Steve Scorfina; keyboardist David Hamilton; Mellotron and flute participant Doug Rayburn; bassist Rick Stockton; drummer Mike Safron; and strings expert Siegfried Carver (delivered Richard Nadler), who added violin, viola, and an unusual hybrid instrument known as a vitar (that sounded something similar to Eddie Phillips’ bowed electric guitar within the ’60s freakbeat heroes the Creation). The mix of flute, Mellotron, violin, and Scorfina’s electric guitar heroics resulted in some evaluations to David Cross-era Ruler Crimson, though Pavlov’s Pet dog had a more straight-ahead, much less twisty sound. Developing popularity in the Midwestern membership circuit resulted in the band’s putting your signature on to ABC-Dunhill Information in 1975 (supposedly for the then-record 650,000 money advance, though that may have already been press-release puffery) as well as the recording of the debut record, Pampered Menial. Background is unclear concerning exactly what occurred next, but in some way, Pavlov’s Dog discovered themselves from ABC-Dunhill and on Columbia Information almost instantly, with the effect that Pampered Menial premiered twice, almost concurrently, on two different brands with a similar sleeve style and monitor lineup. Tom Nickeson changed David Hamilton through the periods for Pavlov’s Dog’s second record, 1976’s On the Sound from the Bell. Carver still left the group following the tour for the next record, leading the music group to provisionally name their third record “Whatever Became of Siegfried?” When Columbia slipped the group following the industrial failure of On the Sound from the Bell, these finished tapes had been eventually bootlegged, frequently beneath the name The St. Louis Hounds; the tapes had been released on Compact disc by way of a German label known as TRC in 1994 beneath the name Third.
