Osmo Vänskä

In the 1980s Osmo Vänskä successfully transitioned from primary clarinetist to conductor and continued to hold a number of the world’s most prestigious and coveted conducting content, including music director from the Minnesota Orchestra. In fact, the changeover was rather short: Vänskä earned the 1982 Besançon Youthful Conductors Competition and thereafter changed largely to performing, landing his initial main post in 1985, when he was appointed visitor conductor from the Lahti Symphony Orchestra.
