Though los Gaiteros de San Jacinto from Colombia have been using gaitero music (the original type of cumbia) for quite some time, many of them, including Antonio “Toño” Fernández, lived in poverty and without recognition within their indigenous property. It wasn’t until 2003, whenever a film over the music arrived, that all of those other world begun to take a critical curiosity about the dying talent. In 2006, Smithsonian Folkways released El Fuego de Sangre Pura to celebrate unadulterated gaitero, which is conducted with three drums, maracas, and two gaitas, the custom solid wood flute from the spot.
