I’m Not Jim

The rock group I’m Not Jim began like a collaboration between novelist Jonathan Lethem (whose books include Motherless Brooklyn as well as the Fortress of Solitude) and Walter Salas-Humara from the Silos. Lethem, a Silos lover, launched himself to Salas-Humara at a Silos concert in New Orleans, and Salas-Humara suggested that both write songs jointly. They convened at Lethem’s home in Maine and finished up composing a whole album’s worthy of of materials within a few days, Lethem composing lyrics and Salas-Humara music. Lethem afterwards added spoken phrase pieces. The task was then extended to add Philip Hernandez and Chris Maxwell (aka the music creation group the Elegant As well), although Lethem cautions that not only is it “not really Jim,” additionally it is “not really a music group” in the most common sense, “but instead some type of floating workshop or laboratory to make music.” I’m Not really Jim’s debut record, You ARE My People, premiered by Bloodshot Information on Sept 9, 2008.
