Bebop & Beyond is really a repertory ensemble specialized in interpreting functions from the present day jazz canon and something of the couple of working jazz rings that’s also a not-for-profit company (Benny Carter, Jimmy Heath, and Orrin Keepnews take a seat on its table of advisors). Founded and led by San Francisco-based tenor saxophonist Mel Martin, the music group offers, since its inception, focused on improvements of traditional bebop music by Charlie Parker, Tadd Dameron, and Charles Mingus. Their record Bebop & Beyond Takes on Dizzy Gillespie was the trumpet innovator’s last studio date.
