The Psy-Kicks

Unfairly neglected with the Goddess of Polish, Sacramento, CA’s Psy-Kicks — Larry Daggs (vocals, guitar), Dan Blakkolb (bass, vocals), John Gulick (drums), Rich Sigl (guitar), and Marc Willis (saxophone) — were documented on the peak of their form in early ’66 yet were hardly ever blessed using a groovy dark disc. Supporters and enthusiasts will be very happy to find out, as a result, that two music from that long-ago program (both Daggs originals) are included on the many performers’ compilation, Nuggets >From The Golden Condition – The Sound Of Youthful Sacramento (Big Defeat CDWIKD 195). The initial, “Summer months Tears,” is actually a restatement of Brian Hyland’s “Covered USING A Kiss,” somewhat psychedelicized. Its moody melancholia pales next to the strident “Second Period Around,” which greater shows the Psy-Kicks’ mettle. A rocker worth the Easybeats, it favorably cooks with energy; drill down that bouncy bass series! The group’s initial incarnation have been at Sacramento’s Johnson SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL in 1964 (as surf-stylists the Intruders). Quickly re-dubbed the Psy-Kicks by supervisor/promoter Dick Leventon, the quintet donned bell-bottoms and tripped on a chaotic touring timetable, playing all of the teenager dances within 150 kilometers of their hometown. By middle-’66, a revolving door got swept several fresh band people in and out. Early in ’67, the three principals — Blakkolb, Gulick, and Daggs — known as it quits. Gulick continued to pound the skins for another Sacramento clothing, the Working Course.
