The Mockingbirds

Produced in Manchester, England, in 1964, when three previous members from the Whirlwinds – Graham Gouldman (b. 10 Might 1945, Manchester, Britain; electric guitar/vocals), Steve Jacobsen and Bernard Basso – had been joined up with by ex-Sabres’ drummer Kevin Godley (b. 7 Oct 1945, Manchester, Britain). Nevertheless, although Graham’s songwriting abilities provided strikes for the Yardbirds, Hollies and Herman’s Hermits, his group was struggling to gain an identical industrial ascendancy. Between 1965 and 1966, the Mockingbirds finished five singles, which ‘You Stole My Appreciate’ was probably the most ambitious. Although co-produced by Giorgio Gomelsky and Paul Samwell-Smith, and abetted by vocalist Julie Driscoll, the melody was a industrial failure as well as the group’s self-confidence was therefore undermined. Gouldman started a solo profession upon the group’s collapse, but afterwards rejoined Godley for many studio projects, which inspired the forming of 10cc.
