John Gill

An excellent supportive participant (whether about drums or banjo), John Gill (who’s someone different compared to the pianist from the same name) has recorded four enjoyable sets for the Stomp Off label. He was raised in the same community that Tony Sbarbaro of the initial Dixieland Jazz Music group lived; Sbarbaro is definitely his main impact on drums. Gill obtained early experience using Tony Parenti and Vince Giordano in a number of configurations. In 1977 Gill he relocated to SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA and became a member of Turk Murphy’s music group, playing drums, banjo and soprano saxophone. During 1984-85, Gill (who was simply still with Murphy) documented a set of Stomp Off pieces on drums along with his Primary Sunset Five, an organization also including a few of Turk’s various other sidemen including pianist Ray Skjelbred. During 1986-87, John Gill going an extended ten-piece music group on his two various other Stomp Off schedules that he known as his California Sunlight Boys, this time around playing banjo.
