The husband-and-wife duo Expenses and Bonnie Hearne first emerged in the past due ’60s as proponents from the Austin, TX, country-folk scene; over the next decades, they continued to be early and enthusiastic followers of region performers, including Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, and Tish Hinojosa. Even though many of their protégés consequently continued to great industrial achievement, the Hearnes languished in comparative obscurity and eventually relocated to Santa Fe, NM; still, they continued to be a popular pull around the folk event circuit, and their regular gigs at region hotel bars regularly sold-out. After some shoestring-budget self-releases, the Hearnes guaranteed the financial support of friend Barney Crutchfield, and with maker Jim Rooney they documented their 1997 Warner American debut, Diamond jewelry in the Tough, a celebration from the couple’s 25th wedding anniversary, featuring guest performances from Lovett, Griffith, Hinojosa, and Jerry Jeff Walker.
