African Music Machine

The African Music Machine was an eight-piece funk outfit from New Orleans led by bassist/songwriter Louis Villery. They got their begin as a residence music group for the Jewel/Paula label axis, playing on information by famous brands Fontella Bass, Small Johnny Taylor, Roscoe Robinson, Ted Taylor, Tommie Small, and vocalist/maker Bobby Patterson, amongst others. From 1972-1974, they slice several of their very own singles for the Patterson-owned Spirit Power subsidiary. The majority of their function was performed in much, James Dark brown vein, sometimes using a little bit of Creole impact blended in. Their first 45s — including “Dark Water Silver,” “Tropical,” and “The Dapp” — afterwards became highly valued products among funk enthusiasts, fetching outlandish prices; a compilation of singles, also entitled Black Water Silver, was reissued in 2000. In 2001, Villery set up a new edition from the African Music Machine and released an eponymous record on Singular.
