Zola Jesus may be the task of Nika Roza Danilova, who crafts dark music dominated by her operatic vocals and keyboards. Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Nika demonstrated a pastime in singing in early stages, buying tone of voice lesson tapes and opera sheet music at age group seven; immediately after, she started dealing with a vocal trainer for another decade. Anxiety as well as the competitive character of opera triggered her to avoid singing for two years, but lacking that type of manifestation spurred her to begin with Zola Jesus. Influenced by high-school favorites like Diamanda Galás, Lydia Lunch time, Throbbing Gristle, and Swans, Nika produced cathartic house recordings using keyboards, drum devices, and other things she had readily available. Her 1st officially released music included several 2008 7″s: the indegent Sons EP on Die Stasi and Soeur Sewer on Sacred Bone fragments. In ’09 2009, Zola Jesus became probably one of the most spoken and blogged-about underground performers, and her launch and touring routine reflected that: combined with the full-length The Spoils, she also released the Tsar Bomba EP on Troubleman, New Amsterdam on Sacred Bone fragments, and an untitled, limited-edition vinyl fabric record and a divide discharge with Burial Hex on Aurora Borealis. On her behalf live music group, she recruited her cousin Deceased Luke to try out synths, bassist Lindsay Mikkola, and drummer Potential Elliott. Nika also performed in the group Previous Ghosts, which highlighted Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart and Freddy Ruppert. She continued to be just as active this year 2010, touring with Fever Ray as well as the xx and launching the cleaner-sounding Stridulum, Stridulum II, and Valusia EPs. The next calendar year she collaborated with Prefuse 73 over the Misanthrope Meditation Combine and released her third full-length, Conatus, which discovered Nika continuing to go from her lo-fi root base and toward experimental digital pop. Toward the finish from the Conatus tour, Nika was asked to execute at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, a meeting that she collaborated with Foetus’ J.G. Thirlwell, who supplied agreements for the Mivos Quartet. These string-based renditions had been captured in 2013’s Variations. For her 4th record, 2014’s Taiga, Nika transferred to Mute Information. Named following the Russian phrase for “forest,” she composed and documented the record on Washington State’s verdant Vashon Isle and blended it in LA with longtime collaborator Dean Hurley.
